Halal Bi Halal or also in the sense of friendship in the life of Indonesian society or the Islamic ummah is a tradition of gathering with extended family or invitees in a certain place to shake hands with each other as an expression of mutual forgiveness so that what is haram becomes halal is called "halal bi halal.”
Quoting an article from pajagalan.com with the title Silaturahmi & "Halal bi Halal" the opinion is that Halal bi Halal (halal with halal, mutually halal) even though the name uses Arabic (lafadz) and has become institutionalized among the population Indonesia at the time of the Prophet SAW and also in the era after that was not found. Until the present century; both in Arab countries and in other Islamic countries (except in Indonesia) this tradition is not popular or cannot be found. Meanwhile, in Indonesia, this tradition only began to be held in the form of ceremonies around the end of the 1940s and began to develop widely after the 1950s. (Islamic Encyclopedia, 2000) Indonesian Encyclopedia, 1978, states that halal bi halal comes from Arabic (lafadz) which is not based on Arabic grammar (ilmu nahwu), as a replacement for the term friendship. Coming from circles who don't understand Arabic, but still love Islam.
Today, halal bi halal is held by almost all levels of Indonesian Muslim society, both by groups from a certain area, extended families, work groups , trader groups, socio-political organizations, private companies and government agencies. Thus joining several different groups taking part in halal bi halal activities. The origins of the halal bi halal tradition, from which region, who started it and when this activity began to be held are difficult to know with certainty. Because, the tradition of "Sembah Sungkem" (coming face to face to express respect and devotion to parents, older people, or people of higher social status) has become entrenched and exists in almost all tribes in Indonesian society.

A Study of the Meaning
In general, groups of people who hold halal bi halal, interpret The term halal bi halal means "freeing each other freely" or "forgiving each other - forgiving each other's mistakes and sins". So the word halal here means "Free" or "Sorry".
The word al-Halal according to Luwes ma'luf (1927:142) means Dhiddul Haram (the opposite of haram). And the word al-Haram means; prevented, prohibited, not allowed, which is taken from the word Mana'a-Harama "Prevent". Thus the word halal means "permissible" or "not prohibited". This is in line with what Abdul Hamid Hakim stated (tt: 13) who interpreted al-halal as meaning al-mubah or al-Jaizu meaning "permissible" (not prohibited). . Thus, the sentence halal bi halal, meaning "Permissible and permissible", is not free to free each other or forgive each other. (Public Relations of the East Kalimantan Bappeda/Sukandar, S.Sos).
