Hearing on the Concept and Scope of Cooperation between the Government of the Republic of Indonesia and the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany in the Management and Protection of Peat

Samarinda,(27/08/2020). The East Kalimantan Provincial Government is currently working to implement green development and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from unsustainable land use.

In general, the peat ecosystem in Indonesia (peat and mangrove) is a complex and interconnected ecosystem, and acts as the most efficient natural terrestrial carbon sink, as a freshwater filter and as flood protection.

In East Kalimantan itself, peatlands are under great pressure from the problem of fires and peat damage as well as greenhouse gas emissions resulting from these conditions.

In this regard, GiZ together with Bappeda of East Kalimantan Province held a Hearing on the Concept and Scope of Cooperation between the Government of the Republic of Indonesia and the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany in the Management and Protection of Peat.

The meeting was chaired by the Head of the East Kalimantan Province Bappeda, Prof. Dr. Ir. H. M. Aswin, MM aims to convey the activities of PROPEAT and then hopefully get useful input for the implementation of the PROPEAT program in East Kalimantan Province.

This project is a government to government collaboration between the Indonesian government and the Federal Republic of Germany facilitated by GIZ Development Partners in encouraging the revitalization of the condition of peatlands and wetlands in the Kayan Sembakung Delta landscape and peatlands in Kalimantan Province East.
