East Kalimantan Bappeda Collaborates with GGGI on Mangrove Rehabilitation Project Using a Nature-Based Approach
Samarinda (08/07/2024), Head of the East Kalimantan Bappeda PSDA Division, Wahyu Gatut Purboyo, officially opened the Impact Study and Environmental Management Plan event for the NASCLIM (Nature-based Solution for Climate Smart Livelihood in Mangrove Landscapes) Project or Nature-Based Solutions for Climate Smart Livelihoods in Natural Landscapes Mangroves.
This event was held at the Mercure Samarinda Hotel, in collaboration with the Global Growth Institute (GGGI), to discuss Impact Assessment and Environmental Management Plans for sustainable and climate-resilient pond development activities.
Attended by various institutions, provincial governments, academics, development partners and business actors, Gatut Purboyo in his speech, stated that this agenda was a good collaboration involving various sectors.
"I think this is a very good collaboration, from the government, the community and also the private sector. How to improve the welfare of coastal communities, especially those who make a living from fish farming without eliminating the environment so as not to cause disasters such as abrasion and the sustainability of the business itself," he said.
"This is also one of the commitments of the East Kalimantan Provincial Government which is collaborating with several development partners on how to minimize climate change. The Provincial Government has also prepared a climate change adaptation document and in the future it will be processed to develop mitigation," he added.
The NASCLIM project aims to rehabilitate mangroves naturally by redesigning the location of pond embankments and sluice gates.
This project seeks to expand and accelerate sustainable mangrove ecosystem cultivation and restoration practices.
NASCLIM will communicate the Integrated Mangrove Cultivation method or Associated Mangrove Aquaculture (AMA) for ponds that are still productive, and Ecological Mangrove Rehabilitation (EMR) for ponds that are no longer productive. This is based on the widespread practice of shrimp farming which is unsustainable from an environmental, social and economic perspective.
The redesign process for both AMA and EMR will involve hydrological construction which has the potential to cause environmental impacts, so consultation with stakeholders is required.
Therefore, this agenda aims to obtain input and feedback from stakeholders for consideration in the decision-making process.
It is hoped that from this event adequate data, information and input will be obtained for the preparation of Impact Assessment documents and Environmental Management Plans for the NASCLIM project in East Kalimantan, as well as improving the quality and relevance of the NASCLIM project plan.
