Towards a Just Energy Transition: Head of Bappeda Discusses Fair Economic Transformation Through Collaboration of Workers and Stakeholders
In order to strengthen the role of workers in a just energy transition, the Head of the East Kalimantan Bappeda, Yusliando, was a resource person at a workshop organized by the National Executive Council of the Confederation of Indonesian Trade Unions (DEN KSPI) and the Confederation of All Indonesian Trade Unions (KSBSI).
Through themed workshops "Strengthening the Bargaining Position of Trade Unions through Social Dialogue to Realize a Just Transition" aims to build social dialogue between workers and stakeholders.
On this occasion, Yusliando explained the plans in the East Kalimantan RPJPD/RPJMD regarding the energy transition and post-coal economic changes. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between stakeholders, especially business groups and labor unions, to ensure that the transition can proceed as expected.
"Our dependence on fossil fuels, especially coal, is very high. However, we must be prepared to face changes when the world no longer needs these energy sources, then the East Kalimantan economy will collapse. This will have a big impact on the East Kalimantan economy, including the loss of thousands of jobs in the mining sector," he said Yusliando.
In a just transition, Yusliando highlighted four important points: the need for a transparent planning process, preparation of workers to enter new business fields, social protection for affected workers, and increasing the number of formal workers.
He also invited stakeholders to be active in regional discussions and consultations regarding a just economic transformation. For information, in the near future the East Kalimantan Provincial Government will form a Regional Consultation Forum to speed up this process.
Yusliando also expressed hope for KSPI to inventory the aspirations of affected workers, provide input for a just transition, and represent workers in the consultation forum that will be formed. He emphasized the importance of upskilling and reskilling workers so they can adapt to a more sustainable manufacturing sector.
