Multi-stakeholder Discussion: Energy Transformation in East Kalimantan Towards Inclusive and Sustainable Economic Development

Balikpapan, 02/20/2024 - Wahyu Gatut Purboyo, as Head of the PSDA Bappeda Division of East Kalimantan Province, highlighted the role of energy transformation in regional long-term planning at the "In-depth Multi-stakeholder Discussion Regarding the Integration of SEA in Preparing Regional Development Plans" at the Swiss Bell Hotel Balikpapan.

During the meeting, Wahyu Gatut Purboyo raised important issues related to "Planning for a Just Energy Transition in the Long-Term and Medium-Term Planning Documents of the East Kalimantan Provincial Government." In his presentation, it was stated that economic transformation in East Kalimantan would lead to sector diversification, away from the dominance of the mining sector and would focus more on high value added industrial sectors, such as the service sector and trade.

The importance of energy transformation in East Kalimantan is reflected in the plan to make economic activities in East Kalimantan sustainable and balanced, taking into account social, economic and environmental development. This effort is expected to be a major contributor in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and can have a positive impact on the global climate.

Wahyu Gatut Purboyo explained that the direction of economic development in East Kalimantan, as stated in the 2025-2045 RPJPD, will focus on inclusive and sustainable economic development. This will be achieved through increasing interaction and collaboration between regions, developing downstream industries based on superior commodities, community economic development, and developing potential tourist destinations.

With energy transformation as the main driver, East Kalimantan is committed to becoming a motor for regional economic development that is highly competitive and environmentally friendly. The positive impact is not only felt by local communities but also makes a significant contribution to global efforts to fight climate change and achieve the target of zero carbon emissions by 2045.

With concrete steps in energy transformation, sustainability and inclusivity can become a solid foundation for development. Through strong collaboration and commitment to inclusive development, it is hoped that East Kalimantan will not only succeed in empowering its people but can also support the global struggle in responding to climate change.
