Preparations for the First Round of the Regional Consultation Forum for the Acceleration of Economic Transformation in East Kalimantan

Samarinda, 25 February 2025 - Bappeda of East Kalimantan Province collaborated with Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and Academics from Mulawarman University to prepare Round 1 of the Regional Consultation Forum in order to accelerate economic transformation in East Kalimantan.

This forum aims to accelerate economic transformation in East Kalimantan through strategy formulation, discussion of challenges, and coordination of steps to support sustainable and inclusive economic growth in East Kalimantan.

The main focus of this meeting is the draft framework for a just energy transition at the national level, the interim results of the study of coal demand projections in East Kalimantan and the basic elements of transformation and just transition.

This series of meetings is in line with national priorities in the National Long Term Development Plan (RPJPN) 2025-2045 which targets accelerating a just energy transition as part of the Golden Indonesia vision.

The transition from the coal sector is one of the crucial aspects in national policy regarding a just energy transition. Therefore, the central government together with the East Kalimantan Provincial Government, including the East Kalimantan Bappeda, are collaborating with GIZ through the Innovation Regions for a Just Energy Transition (IKI-JET) project in preparing a national framework for a just and sustainable energy transition.

In an effort to prepare an inclusive policy design, a Regional Consultation Forum was held to gather input and enrich the study of initial design of the framework. Today's event is a pre-round of FKD, which is part of a series of FKD activities consisting of four rounds. This forum is scheduled to take place from March to October 2025 with the following stages:

• First round (March - July 2025): Formulate main action plans related to increasing productivity, sustainability and resilience.

• Second round (August - September 2025): Discuss supporting action plans to support the implementation of main actions.

• Third round (October 2025): Determine scenarios, projections impact, as well as strengthening commitment to all action plans.

• Fourth round (November 2025): Develop monitoring and control mechanisms for action plans to ensure effective implementation.

It is hoped that this activity can produce harmonized and comprehensive policies, so that a just energy transition can run well and effectively in East Kalimantan. Through this forum, various stakeholders can make strategic contributions in realizing a more inclusive and sustainable economic transformation.
