FGD in the context of initial feasibility study to attract foreign investment in the Kariangau Industrial Estate
Bappeda of East Kalimantan Province facilitates Focus Group Discussion (FGD) activities and field work visits as part of a series of initial feasibility studies to attract direct foreign investment (FDI) in the Kariangau Industrial Estate, Balikpapan. This activity aims to explore the potential of the industrial estate to attract the attention of foreign investors in supporting economic growth as one of the industrial estates in East Kalimantan.
The Kariangau Industrial Estate has a number of advantages, including strategic locations close to the Capital City (IKN) and access to the distribution of very strategic goods, both for domestic and international markets. In addition, this region has a large natural resource potential that can be developed for the natural resource -based industry (SDA) such as energy, manufacturing, and processing. In particular, industries related to energy and renewable energy technology, which are expected to develop rapidly, this area is also ready to receive investment thanks to the full support of the local government and central government through various fiscal incentives. This area is very suitable for developing the renewable energy industry, waste management, and environmentally friendly technology.
This FGD activity is part of the Indonesia Economic Innovation Partnership Program (EIPP), a cooperation between the Indonesian government and the South Korean government that has entered the fifth phase. In 2025, the theme that was carried was the "Early Feasibility Development and Study Strategy to attract direct foreign investment (FDI) in the Kariangau Industrial Estate, East Kalimantan."
Based on the results of the discussion, several recommendations for the development of the Kariangau Industrial Estate have among them, the importance of developing modern and efficient port facilities, including container and logistical warehouse terminals, as well as integrated transportation networks that include toll roads and railroad tracks to connect the Kariangau Industrial Estate with IKN and other areas. The government is also advised to provide fiscal incentives, ease of licensing, and propose the Kariangau Industrial Estate into a Special Economic Zone (KEK) to attract more investors. There needs to be cooperation with universities to develop research and technology as well as to increase the competitiveness of local workers. The focus of industry development in the Kariangau region is also advised to lead to priority industries based on Regional Regulation Number 10 concerning the East Kalimantan Province Industry Development Plan in 2019-2039, namely the Agro Agro Industry, Gas and Coal-Based Chemical Industry, the Food Industry, and Maritime Logistics.
