FGD Study of East Kalimantan Economic Diversification to Support a Just Energy Transition

Samarinda (14/01) – In order to support a just and sustainable energy transition, the Head of the East Kalimantan Bappeda together with the Head of the Natural Resources Management Division (PSDA) and staff attended a Focus Group Discussion (FGD ) Economic Diversification Study.


This event took place at the Mercure Hotel Samarinda as part of Innovation Regions program for a Just Energy Transition (IKI-JET), the result of collaboration between the Indonesian Government and the German Government.


This FGD was attended by various regional officials, including the Department of Manpower and Transmigration, the Department of Tourism, the Department of Industry, Trade, Cooperatives and SMEs, the Department of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, as well as academics and community organizations.

The main objective is to discuss the method of identifying priority sectors for economic diversification in East Kalimantan, which is a coal producing region in Indonesia.


In the discussion, resource person Philipp Neurburg from the Global Policy Incubator (GPI) Berlin presented the results of a study related to economic diversification strategies, which include three main aspects:

1. Assessment of the current level of economic diversification.

2. Definition of economic, social and environmental goals as diversification directions.

3. Identify sectors with significant potential for economic transformation.


This study is expected to be guidance in developing economic diversification strategies in East Kalimantan, in line with the region's efforts to reduce dependence on extractive sectors such as mining and coal.


< p class="ql-align-justify">The FGD participants provided valuable responses and input related to the method presented, which will be an improvement material for economic diversification strategies.


By holding this discussion, it is hoped that East Kalimantan can accelerate a just and sustainable economic transformation.


This FGD also emphasized the importance of cross-sectoral collaboration to prioritize valuable sectors higher, for a more inclusive and environmentally friendly future.
