Public Consultation on Draft Government Regulations Concerning the Protection and Management of Mangrove Ecosystems

The meeting was attended by Ministries/Institutions; Provincial Governments of East Kalimantan, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, South Kalimantan and North Kalimantan; Universities and Experts; Environmentalists/Related Partners/NGOs. Presenting two resource persons, namely Prof. Satyawan Pudyatmoko as Deputy for Planning and Evaluation from BRGM and Ir. Arief Yuwono, MA as Expert Staff for the Minister of Environment and Forestry

UU Number 32 of 2009 concerning Environmental Protection and Management is based on the following Basic Philosophy: A good and healthy living environment is the Human Rights of Every Citizen (Article 28H of the 1945 Constitution); National Economic Development refers to the principles of Environmentally Friendly Sustainable Development; Regional Autonomy changes the relationship between central and regional government authority as well as the quality of the environment which is increasingly declining and is being exacerbated by global warming due to climate change.

To overcome Indonesia's mangrove problems, such as overlapping deforestation rates and regulatory gaps, regulations in the form of the government are needed as a basis for accelerating various serious, consistent and integrated corrective actions carried out by stakeholders . This regulation is also used to provide legal certainty over the Mangrove Ecosystem and guarantee protection for everyone to get a good and healthy environment as part of overall environmental protection and management.

Apart from that, protection and sustainable management of the Mangrove Ecosystem is also an integral part of integrated coastal area management and overall River Watershed (DAS) management.
