Webinar on National Blue Carbon Workshop “Blue Carbon Ecosystem : Challenges and Opportunities”
Samarinda, (8/09/2020). Head of the Economic and Natural Resources Division of the East Kalimantan Province Bappeda, Saur Parsaoran. T, S, Pi, MEMD took part in the Webinar on National Blue Carbon Workshop with the theme "Blue Carbon Ecosystem: Challenges and Opportunities" virtually via the Zoom Meeting application.
The webinar, which was opened by the Deputy for Maritime Affairs and Natural Resources at the National Planning and Development Agency, was moderated by Toney Wagey, PhD (Executive Director of ICCTF) and was attended by around 170 participants consisting of officials from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Ministry of Bappenas, Ministry of Coordinating Maritime Affairs and Investment, Bappeda Provinces throughout Indonesia, Dinas Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Provinces throughout Indonesia, Dean of FPIK Riau University, Director of IORA Indian Ocean Blue Carbon Hub (CSIRO), and NGOs working in the conservation sector
This meeting aims to gather key multi-stakeholder actors to develop the Blue Carbon Road Map for the future. Apart from that, it provides an understanding of Blue Carbon and the urgency of mainstreaming Blue Carbon in efforts to mitigate Green House Gas emissions in Indonesia.
Indonesia has 3.1 million hectares of mangroves and 3.3 million seagrass beds. Where this ecosystem is estimated to have a quarter of the world's coastal carbon reserves, however, Saur stated in his report that several challenges are still encountered in Blue Carbon management, namely: Data Inventory (spatially based), Determination of Standard Methodologies, Integrated and concentrated efforts (implementation), and Sustainable Funding Policies/Programs.
