Lokakarya Just Transition in Coal - Based Region

The global push for transition efforts towards a low-carbon economy brings special challenges for coal producing and exporting countries, including Indonesia.

In connection with this, T20 Indonesia together with LPEM FEB UI and Wuppertal Institute held a Forum Group Discussion (FGD) which discussed how the economic transition process in coal producing areas could be carried out by holding open discussions with the Directorate of Mineral and Coal Program Development, the Director General of Coal Minerals, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and with the Provincial Governments of South Sumatra, South Kalimantan and East Kalimantan.

The FGD was carried out with the aim of discussing the issue of coal transition from three points of view, namely related to the global perspective, the status quo in coal producing regions (such as South Sumatra, South Kalimantan and East Kalimantan) , as well as discussions with local governments regarding needs that must be met and knowledge gaps that must be closed to support regional economic improvement in relation to coal transition efforts.

Head of Bappeda East Kalimantan Province, Prof. Dr. H.M. Aswin, MM was a resource person representing the East Kalimantan Provincial Government in the event which was held online on Wednesday (06/04/2022).

"In efforts to improve the regional economy in relation to the coal transition effort, it contains the main problem issues that have been stated in the East Kalimantan Regional Medium Term Development Plan (RPJMD), namely the slow economic transformation of the sector towards management Sustainable Natural Resources," said the head of the East Kalimantan Bappeda in the forum.

It was further stated that the East Kalimantan Provincial Government continues to strive to carry out economic transformation, for example Kab. Berau is directed at the tourism sector, Kab. Kutim together with Bontang City in the condensate sector, Samarinda City in the trade and shipping sector, Balikpapan in the services sector, and Kab. Paser, PPU, and Kukar in the Agricultural sector.

In the FGD, other speakers from the provincial government were also present. South Sumatra, South Kalimantan, Wuppertal Institute Germany, LPEM FEB UI, as well as responders from elements of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and IESR.
