East Kalimantan Becomes Green Economic Transformation Pilot Project Province

Samarinda, (25/06/2025) - The Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas together with German development partners, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), held a Coordination Meeting for the Study of Capacity Needs for East Kalimantan Province on Thursday, (19/06) at the Propeda Meeting Room, Floor II, Bappeda, Kalimantan Province East.

There are seven provinces as pilot locations. The three main provinces that will be the focus of project implementation are Bali Province, Riau Islands Province and East Kalimantan Province. Four additional provinces are also involved as supporting areas, namely Aceh Province, Central Java Province, East Nusa Tenggara Province and South Sulawesi Province. This appointment is a form of recognition of East Kalimantan's commitment and readiness to support the green economic transformation agenda which is the direction of national and global development policies.

This coordination meeting is part of the initial implementation of the "Green Economic Recovery: Green Growth Diagnostic Framework" cooperation project between Bappenas and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). This project aims to support Indonesia's transition towards a sustainable green economy through strengthening evidence-based development planning capacity, increasing policy synergy, and developing regional capacity.

This activity was opened by the Head of the Economic and Natural Resources Division of the East Kalimantan Province Bappeda representing the Head of the East Kalimantan Province Bappeda.

Also present and providing key direction, the Director of Macroeconomic Planning and Development Model Development of the Bappenas, Ibnu Yahya, who is also the main person responsible for project implementation at the national level.

In his presentation, GIZ representatives presented the initial results of the capacity needs study in East Kalimantan. This study aims to identify the readiness and challenges faced by the region in supporting an inclusive and contextual green economic transformation.

Discussions took place actively involving all participants from several relevant Regional Apparatus within the East Kalimantan Provincial Government, including BPKAD, DPMPTSP, LH Service, ESDM Service, Forestry Service, Agriculture Service, and others.

The participants also provided input on data collection through questionnaires which will be used as a basis for preparing project work plans at the regional level.

In the closing session, Director Ibnu Yahya emphasized the importance of cross-sector commitment and collaboration at the regional level so that green development strategies can be integrated in medium-term and annual planning documents, and can answer regional-specific challenges.

Meeting This coordination is the initial milestone of a participatory process involving local stakeholders in formulating an environmentally sound and sustainable development agenda. East Kalimantan, together with Bali and the Riau Islands, were designated as the main pilot project provinces in this strategic initiative.
