Berau DPRD Coordination Regarding Handling Derawan Beach Abrasion

Samarinda, 24 September 2020. In the context of consultation and coordination regarding the handling of coastal abrasion on Derawan Island, two members of the Berau Regency DPRD paid a working visit to the Bappeda of East Kalimantan Province.
This meeting was welcomed by the Head of the East Kalimantan Provincial Bappeda. Dr. Ir. H. M. Aswin, MM, accompanied by the Head of Economics and Natural Resources, Saur Parsaoran. T, S.Pi, MEMD, Head of Data and Information Analysis Subdivision Agus Taswanto ST, and staff for the Development and Transportation Infrastructure Division Fryma Putra.P, ST.
Ir. Hj. Elita Herlina, M.Si from Commission II said that Derawan Island is currently in a worrying stage, several cultural heritage sites on Derawan Island have been damaged due to abrasion, for example the beach area which has disappeared and the historical tourist attraction of President Suharto's house, half of which has been eaten away by abrasion, "This is our concern that Derawan is no longer attractive, whereas Derawan Island is one of the tourism potentials that contributes to PAD. In fact, Derawan is not only the pride of East Kalimantan but also the pride of North Kalimantan," he explained.
Regarding this matter, Aswin said that he had coordinated with the regional infrastructure sector, and found that the Derawan Islands were included in the Berau Kelay River Region which is the authority of the center.
The East Kalimantan Provincial Government has proposed “Derawan Island Beach Protection” at the 2019 Public Works Conference in Lombok and the 2020 Public Works Conference in Manado, but according to the Ministry of Public Works it has not yet become a top priority so it is only included in the stock program.
In the future, it is necessary to propose strategies by the Provincial Government, Regency Government and Berau DPRD so that protecting Derawan Island Beach can become the Ministry of Public Works' main priority in 2021.
